OFF-Temple
During summer 2022 we were asked to design and build a morning temple for a theater festival, which would be activated every day with performances or workshops over the time of the festival, serving as a safe space for discussions on identity.
The design of it reflected on the three criteria that Vitruvius (c. 80–70 BC – after c. 15 BC) elaborated in the ‘De Architectura’.
Venustas, Firmitas, Utilitas, namely delight, strength, commodity. The three were challanged, being contextualized to ephemerality, as well as to a relatively low budget and the idea of creating a “queer temple”.
Against the immortality of roman temples, we made a structure we could dismantle and rebuild in a couple of days on the other side of europe (the temple “moved” to Oostende, Belgium), by renting and assembling generic elements that define the infrastructures of our cities and landscapes. In such way, Venustas was found in making domestic those invisible and rough elements, Firmitas in using elements defined by standards, Utilitas in ephemerality, in giving room to new rituals, habits, that were kept out of our liturgies and traditions, temples and altars for a little bit too long.
